Personal Reflections

Why should we always dance the same way?

In general, we are noticing a poor and devalued dance.
The use of few sources may give rise to less quality of personal moves, a minimum amount of steps repeated over and over again, and a very little creativity. The reasons: lack of information, confortability, fears, usage, or a mixture of all of them. There are several general features among most of the people on a dance floor of a milonga: the use of a limited repertory of moves performed the same way by everybody. These are four steps proposed to the woman, which are repeated by several dancers, the well-known eight backwards, crossing the left leg before the right one, cut-eight with a turn to the left on the man´s part. This small repertory seems to be the beginning and the end of the dance, with minimum variations.
Attempt against the essence of the dance (improvisation)
A dance that is born free and infinite in possibilities as from the permanent improvisation and recreation, suffers from being corseted by the limitation of moves, resources and dynamics. It is danced by repeating the same moves over and over again in the same way. Some examples are the following: an only one way to walk in connection with the partner, by only one front of the embrace, first excluding move: shifting to the side, etc.
Just a little after a basic understanding of the music and the dancing partner is achieved, it seems like people get settled with it. Just like a child who is beginning to talk and manages to satisfy his needs that way will stop learning the language, we stay babbling a dance that offers an infinite higher richness.
Those who achieve better goals can do it not because of their nature, but because of their work developing the potential that we all have hidden. It is a fact that we are usually happy with the use of only 10% of our capabilities.
Repetition of one move. Benefits and limitations.
The repetition of the body gesture as a way to balance actions and have access to new figures is one of the best ways to achieve the goal of having new habits.
However, the essential feature of the tango dance is the improvisation, and repetition is a denial of a significant component. The repeated performance of a move will bring confortability in its automation, security in its lack of surprise, but the price to pay –everything has a price in life- is the limitation, resignation, boredom and lack of creativity of this way of dancing.
In one case, only the face of the partner will change, and the same dance will be repeated. In the other case, it will be possible to dance each tango differently with the same partner.
The note mentioned here is an invitation to display all the possible resources we have in our potential, but which have not been fully developed.
